Alpine Ice
Alpine Ice

“Alpine Ice”
Photo of the Week #39, selected in February, 2020

On the highest paved road in the United States, ending at the peak of a “fourteener,” Mount Evans, in Central Colorado, winter tends to be long. This photo was taken in June, not January, a few years ago, right after the road was opened for the summer season. This is a shot of Summit Lake, along Mount Evans Scenic Drive, a little more than five miles from the peak.

From outherecolorado.com: This alpine lake sits nestled in a glacier-carved cirque below 14,264-foot Mount Evans and 13,842-foot Mount Spalding. The area, designated in 1965 as Colorado’s first National Natural Landmark, is considered an excellent example of alpine tundra in the United States, with numerous alpine plants growing among the boulders.

If you plan a visit, make sure you are aware of altitude sickness, which can cause headaches, vomiting, tiredness, confusion and dizziness. For some, the conditions can be serious. Here is more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altitude_sickness

Early Winter in Clinton Gulch
Early Winter in Clinton Gulch

“Early Winter in Clinton Gulch”
Photo of the Week #33, selected in December, 2019

The reservoir behind the Clinton Gulch Dam near Copper Mountain and Breckenridge in Colorado has always been photogenic. Fortunately, I was never scared off by a few inches of snow in this part of the state and was eventually rewarded. I was astounded by this beautiful reflected image of the alpine backdrop of the Tenmile Range that includes Fletcher Mountain, Wheeler Mountain, Clinton Peak, and Bartlett Mountain, along with a nice layer of contrasting snow.

Easily accessed along the Top of the Rockies Byway (CO Highway 91), just 20 minutes northeast of Leadville, the reservoir is a very popular tourist stop. It’s mountain trail is about 2.5 miles round-trip and sits between 10,986′ and 11,125′ of elevation.

Sunken Boat Exposed by Drought
Sunken Boat Exposed by Drought

“Sunken Boat Exposed by Drought”
Photo of the Week #24, selected in October, 2019

Lake Mead is a large reservoir created by Hoover Dam at the Nevada/Arizona border, not far from Las Vegas. The current continuous drought has dropped the lake’s water level by over 160′ compared to its most recent high mark measured in 1990. This has caused the lake shore to draw back several hundred feet in places, exposing a myriad of items long thought lost. This boat was one of the more interesting of my finds there. I often wonder what caused this pleasure vessel to sink and how long ago that was.

“An Emerald Delight”
Photo of the Week #9, selected in July, 2019

A few miles north of Crested Butte, Colorado, nestled in the Elk Mountains between Mount Baldy and Mount Bellview, is a lake with a beautiful hue. Crested Butte has some of the most beautiful sights to explore and Emerald Lake is certainly no exception. The alpine lake sits above 11,000 feet and is one of two so-named lakes in Colorado, the other being in the greater Rocky Mountain National Park.

Shortly after taking this photo, we had it printed to canvas and framed for our (then) living room wall — the centerpiece of the room’s decor! The sun, clouds, shadows and pines made the canvas print appear as a painting, especially when the sun shone on it from the nearby living room window. The color print is now one of four prominent photos in our fifth wheel’s living room.

With the recent retirement of my full-sized website, I’ve decided to revisit my “Photo of the Week” series from the start, which began in May of 2019.

It’s not all wheat fields and hay bales in Kansas, if you know where to look… As always, please click on the link to view the clear, full-color image:
