Moored in a Brown Fog
Moored in a Brown Fog

“Moored in a Brown Fog”
Photo of the Week #16, selected in August, 2019

I took hundreds of photos during our tour of the Maine coast a few years ago. The fishing boats in this shot were moored in Seal Harbor, on the southern shore of eastern Mount Desert Island, near Acadia National Park.

We experienced rain and fog nearly every day during our autumn visit, which is normal for this region of New England, but the cold marine climate did make for some interesting shots. I love that the faded Cerulean-blue boat tells you that this isn’t a sepia or black-and-white photo.

Colors From St. Helens Ash
Colors From St. Helens Ash, Washington State

“Colors From St. Helens Ash”

I hadn’t been to the Mount St. Helens National Park in Washington State’s southern Cascade Range in a couple of decades, but drove through it in 2019, and this pic quickly became one of my favorites. The area is almost unrecognizable since my last visit, other than the volcano itself. Nature has a way of reclaiming even the worst of disaster sites. Interestingly, I lived in Eastern Washington in May of 1980 when she blew, and I remember the bizarre ash clouds approaching and reaching us from across the state.

Beam Me Up, Scotty
Beam Me Up, Scotty

“Beam Me Up, Scotty”

I couldn’t help but notice this unusual cloud formation over Bryce Canyon, Utah. Interestingly, Bryce is not a canyon at all, but rather a collection of giant amphitheaters made up of distinctive geological structures called hoodoos. This vista, along with many views at nearby Zion National Park, makes this area one of our favorites to visit. That said, this is the only time we found the Starship Enterprise seemingly hovering over the park…
